Health Equity in Action: MAD is Addressing Disparities in Columbus
Earlier this week, we came together at Standard Hall for a day that was about more than just providing services, it was about offering dignity, care, and meeting critical health and wellness needs for our neighbors. In honor of Minority Health Month, we focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by underserved communities, especially those impacted by homelessness. The event was an opportunity to not only support but also raise awareness of the pressing health disparities that many individuals in our community face.
In Columbus, the homeless population has surged by 24% over the past two years, with nearly 2,400 individuals experiencing homelessness as of January. Many of these individuals are from marginalized communities that already face significant barriers to health care, affordable housing, and other essential services. We know that homelessness disproportionately affects people of color, and this crisis is exacerbated by systemic inequities in access to health care and housing.
At Make-A-Day, we strive to meet people where they are, especially when it comes to health and wellness. With the support of the community, we offered:
🍽️ 193 chef-prepared meals: More than just food, it was a moment of nourishment and stability.
💇 42 haircuts: Offering a boost of confidence and a sense of dignity through personal care.
📱 80 free phones: A vital tool for staying connected to resources like jobs, healthcare, and housing.
🛒 10 guests enrolled in SNAP: Ensuring access to healthy food, because food security is a basic human right.
❤️ 20 guests connected with HIV and Hep C testing: Vital steps toward health, awareness, and the care people need to thrive.
These numbers tell a powerful story, but it’s the individuals behind them that matter most. One guest, who recently lost everything in a fire, left with not only a new pair of shoes but a renewed sense of hope. For her, it was the first moment of kindness in days filled with loss, reminding us that even small gestures can have a life-changing impact.
None of this would have been possible without the support of our amazing partner, Molina Healthcare. Their ongoing commitment to providing health coverage and support in underserved communities has been instrumental. Molina’s generosity in providing raffle prizes and continuous support helped make this event a success, and we are so grateful for their dedication to improving health and wellness for everyone.
As we reflect on this event, we know the work is far from over. In Columbus, the number of unsheltered individuals is projected to increase by 68% by 2028. The disparities in health care and housing access continue to challenge many of our neighbors, especially in communities of color.
